Depends… Do a little research, if AI is using their new 777-300, or -200LR ’s i would go with them. From the trip reports I’ve seen, AI’s 777 look far superior to Americans 777s. However, if Air India is using the 747, i would go with American.
Also, you can try flying into JFK or EWR, and then taking a flight to ORD. JFK now has many airlines operating to India, like AI 777 (non stop), Delta, Jet Airways, American. EWR has Continental, Jet Airways and AI.
Hope I could help

If you ask me, then it all depends in the price. If they are equal then check the flight amenities. But I personally would go for Air India. AA flights are very congested.

I went from London to Madras via Bombay with Air India and was very happy with them. It was far better than I expected. The plane was a Boeing 777. There was a choice of Indian or western food, and it was very good. The cabin crew were really helpful, kind, and friendly. The only problem I had was in Bombay on the way back. On the plane from Madras we’d been told to identify our baggage before going to the long-haul flight back to London, and I searched around carousels for ages trying to find it. It was actually on a truck outside the terminal, but I didn’t get that bit when the announcement was made on the plane.I messed up on that one and missed the flight. They’d called my name three times and when I finally got to the gate the guy said the plane had just left, twenty minutes late. I felt pretty stupid and depressed, but the guy took pity on me,took me to an office, and booked me onto the next day’s flight at no extra charge. While he was doing that one of the girls in the office brought me a coffee and said You’ll be feeling pretty bad with yourself. Cheer up. You’ll still get home. Later,I booked into a hotel just outside the airport and wrote an apologetic letter to the airline, with huge praise for the people who helped me and then had a day in Bombay. The next day everything was fine. The same guy was doing gate duty He gave me a big smile, and said Don’t worry about yesterday. These things happen. Pleased to help. Enjoy your trip home. That’s really good service, and I still feel a deep gratitude to the kindly and considerate staff of Air India at Bombay,or,as I should call it now, Mumbai. I really enjoyed India, and I’d love to get back there. The waterways in Kerala are beautiful.

Well truthfully (I cant believe im saying this) I would go with Air India because even though American Airlines is the only airline I will fly on, Since you are traveling from india and you are on india airlines
(Air India) you will have a better chance of having a bigger and better plane
