Cheapest time to travel across the country (Philadelphia to Chicago, LA)?

Sometime before next spring I want to fly from Philadelphia to Chicago to Los Angeles, where I’d stay for two, maybe three, days. Obviously I don’t know much about air traveling rates, so I’m wondering in what month I’d be able to save the most money when flying. Any additional tips about finding the cheapest hotels would be awesome as well.

    after the kids go back to school is usually the best months, and traveling in the cold states in the winter time is usually cheaper too.
    The cheapest time of day is early ( the first couple flights) and late late. The times that most ppl don’t want to fly.

    I live in a tourist town and it’s so peaceful and quiet right now cause tourism is down….. GO on you trip now, the plane fares are dropping and hotel fares are dropping
