  1. Charu Says:

    Let the trains meet after time ‘t’ hours.

    The distance travelled by train with 40 miles per hour in time t hours = 40 X t = 40t.
    The distance travelled by train with 50 miles per hour in time t hours = 50 X t = 50t.

    Since the trains meet, the total distance covered by two traines will be 960 miles.

    Hence,
    40t + 50t = 960
    90t = 960
    t = 960/90
    t = 10.66 hours

    Converting to hours and minutes, t = 10 hours and 40 minutes.

    Since the trains started at noon, they will meet at 10:40 PM.

  2. Dee W Says:

    40x + 50x = 960
    90x = 960
    x = 10 2/3 hrs
    10:40 pm

  3. amada Says:

    Each hour they come closer at a rate:

    40 + 50= 90 miles/hr
    960/90= 10 and 6/9 hours= 10 hours and 2/3 hours= 10 hours and 40 minutes

    The trains started at noon, so at approximately 10:40 PM

  4. cidyah Says:

    Time = distance / speed
    Assume that train 1 has traveled x miles when they pass each other. Train 2 has traveled (960-x) miles.
    x / 40 = (960-x) / 50
    50x=40(960-x)
    50x=38,400-40x
    90x=38,400
    x=426.66 miles
    Time taken to travel 426.66 miles = 426.66/40 =10.66 hrs
    12:00 PM + 10.66 hrs = 10:40 PM (approximately)
